A stunning aurora caused by a severe geomagnetic storm is painting the sky with vibrant hues in the Atlanta area around 10:30 pm. The celestial display is a rare sight for the region and is expected to continue into the early hours of Saturday morning.

A dramatic blast from the sun set off a geomagnetic storm in Earth's atmosphere on Friday that is expected to bring the northern lights to lower latitudes than usual. Geomagnetic storms are caused by disturbances in the Earth's magnetic field resulting from solar activity.

Scientists rate the intensity of geomagnetic storms on the G-scale, which ranges from G1 (minor) to G5 (extreme). The current storm is rated as a G3 (strong), which means it has the potential to disrupt GPS and communications systems and cause power outages in some areas.

Residents in the Atlanta area are urged to enjoy the celestial show while it lasts. Such a vibrant auroral display is a rare occurrence in the region and may not be seen again for many years to come.
